Product Design Case Studies

Sol for GE

Sol for GE

"Sol is really about extending an experience for consumers, letting them tap into something they use throughout the day – light – to unleash the possibilities of the smart home,” says Jeff Patton, General Manager Connected Home Products, GE Lighting. “It’s breaking boundaries as the first product of its kind, not only for its voice integration but for its unique lighting features designed to help homeowners do more.”

Sol was designed in part by Richard Clarkson, famed designer of The Cloud, a cloud-shaped ceiling fixture that produces a motion-triggered lightning and thunder performance. In addition to voice control, the product can also be controlled via a free C by GE app for iPhone or Android devices.

Canvas for Meural

Meural combines the best of art, technology, and design to create products that make us feel something. We are building a future in which art lives in every home, and everyone can become a patron of the arts. Our first product is the Meural Canvas: a smart frame designed with Meural’s proprietary TrueArt technology—a combination of hardware, firmware, and algorithmic software meticulously-engineered to display rich and vividly textured art and photography. The Meural Canvas can be easily controlled via gesture (a wave of the hand) or mobile app, and acts as a conduit to our expansive art library, my.meural.com—an expertly-curated and ever-growing collection of artworks sourced from the catalogues of leading museums, collections, and artists, and spanning the past, present, and future of art.

Bauble for Bombay Sapphire

Five design studios have been invited to rethink Christmas for The New Tradition Collection by Bombay Sapphire. The project invites each collaborator to recreate a Christmas product in an unconventional way. It’s Nice That will be previewing the creations in the weeks leading up to Christmas that will culminate in a special New Years Eve showpiece designed by Bompas and Parr.

“I liked the concept of a bauble, it’s a simple geometric sphere with a suspension point making for a really flexible foundation for design exploration. There are so many opportunities to explore what a bauble could become and potential experiments for how to evolve the design,” explains Richard Clarkson, founder of Brooklyn-based Richard Clarkson Studio, about his reimagining of the bauble as a terrarium. “I was really excited by the possibility of reimagining an object, in a new light. We tend to focus mainly on furniture and lighting so anything beyond that is a nice addition to our workflow at the studio.”
